Serum tests for hormones measure the amount of hormone that might be delivered to tissue, whereas saliva hormone testing reflects the amount of hormone actually delivered to tissue. Hormones must go through tissue in order to get into saliva, which means that salivary hormone levels are an excellent measure of bioavailable hormones and tend to correlate well with patient symptoms.
